The new kid on the (street food) block is Hawker House. The latest child of the genius minds behind Street Feast London was born last Friday and will be around for the next 6 weeks. Inspired by the omnipresent hawkers around Asia, Hawker House is the Shoreditchesque version of a night market housed inside a building near Cambridge heath.
So you’re in the know: a hawker center is the Asian equivalent of what is known as a food court in the West – except it has actually great food and a lively atmosphere and it’s absolutely worth eating at.
Hawker House is fun: it’s at night (till 2AM) and inside, with dim lights, wine and whisky, and other smokeries.
Smokestak are bad boys! You’ll smell their 4.5 tons(!!) smoker a mile away, so don’t worry about finding the venue and just follow the olfactive trail. It’s not really a smoker, it’s a massive locomotive designed only for BBQ imported straight from Texas. Their ribs are fabulous, smokey as hell (pun intended), sweet and soft, with the right amount of heat. Don’t miss them!
There were plenty of other stands, from the funny dudes and twisted Indian tapas at Rōla wala, to tapas from Morito, to delicious lobster rolls from BOB’s lobster – it’s all there!
With its intimate settings and serious selection of fine booze, Hawker House is the perfect venue to enjoy a toddy with some ribs on your next night out. But it’s maybe not the ideal place for a first date, unless your partner likes her whisky (and hair) smoked!
