Impressions – Ottolenghi, London

Yotam Ottolenghi has been one of our favourites chefs of all times. His food is simple, diverse, and absolutely delicious. We genuinely connected with his cooking style, influences and recipes: generally gorgeous middle-eastern dishes with loads of veggies and plenty of our favourite ingredients and spices such as garlic, sumac, za’atar, lemons, yogurt or tahini.

We have known about Ottolenghi‘s food by cooking our way through his books for a while (Ottlenghi: The Cookbook, Plenty, and Jerusalem – which are packed with moutwatering recipes), but being in London we had to try the food live to see (& taste) for ourselves.

The food is indeed delicious and delicate, just like we hoped, but slightly better. So good in fact that we wished the portions were bigger. Much bigger. For your own’s sake, we recommend you skip the massive selection of sweets – they are all outrageously good and you’ll eat more than reasonable.

Anyway, we absolutely recommend visiting one of their outposts next time you’re in town. Or at least check out Yotam’s column in The Guardian and try some of the hundreds of these recipes there to get an idea of what to expect.
